Carthage police are investigating the robbery of the Pete's Convenience Store at Baker and Central early Friday morning.

Carthage Community Policing Officer Chad Dininger said William Bell, 23, Carthage, was charged with first degree robbery in connection with the robbery at 2:21 a.m. at the convenience store at 1224 W. Central Ave.

Dininger said Bell apparently got away with an undetermined amount of money and took a taxi to Webb City where he was last seen Friday morning at the Waffle House on Madison Avenue.

Dininger said Bell turned himself in to police in Tulsa, Okla., over the weekend.

He said Bell was being held on Tuesday in the Tulsa County Jail on no bond awaiting extradition to Missouri. Bond in Jasper County is $20,000 cash only.

Dininger said police received a 911 call and a “duress alarm” call at the same time at 2:21 a.m. from the store.

The clerk said a large man wearing a ski mask came in the front door and demanded all the cash from the cash register.

He said the clerk recogized his voice and stature of someone who was a regular customer.

“He didn't display a weapon, he just came in and demanded he put all the cash in a bag,” Dininger said. “The clerk said he was a big guy and he didn't want to escalate the situation over money.”

The clerk said the suspect left the store out the back door.

Officers canvassed the area and the clerk at the Econo Lodge Motel said he saw someone matching the suspect's description.

The motel clerk said he saw the individual get in a taxi. The taxi company told officers they dropped the individual off at the Waffle House restaurant on Madison in Webb City.

Police obtained video from the Waffle House that showed the suspect in the restaurant, but officers lost his trail at that point and the search was continuing as of 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Police ask if anyone has any information about Bell's wherabouts that they call the police department at 237-7200.
