A man who was taken to the hospital after he was shot by Jasper County Sheriff's Deputies Tuesday afternoon died of his wounds at Mercy Hospital Joplin.

The Jasper County Sheriff's Office said Louis C. Miller, 66, Joplin, was pronounced dead at 3:48 p.m. on Tuesday.

Jasper County Sheriff's Spokesman Tim Williams said the incident happened in the 900 block of Landreth Avenue in Joplin.

Williams said on Wednesday that family had been notified and the names of the officers involved were not being released as of Wednesday morning.

Williams said Tuesday evening that the Missouri State Highway Patrol had been called in to investigate the incident.

Williams said Sheriff's Civil Process officers came to the home at around 3 p.m. on Tuesday to serve court papers on a resident when a man came out of the home with a knife.

“The civil process officers called for backup and other officers arrived on scene,” Williams said. “The man charged at officers and shots were fires. The male was hit and he's being transported to Mercy Hospital Joplin for treatment.”

The investigation is ongoing.
