Jasper County Circuit Judge David Mouton has ordered a new mental examination to determine if Lee Yang, 28, rural Diamond, is competent to stand trial for the 2015 shooting death of his grandfather.

A hearing was held on Tuesday, June 13, 2017, on a motion by Yang's public defenders to have Yang examined again, a little more than a year after he was declared competent to stand trial by the Missouri Department of Health.

Mouton listened to five hours of testimony and statements by psychologists on both sides before ordering a new mental evaluation.

Yang faces charges of second degree murder, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon in the March 15, 2015 shooting death of his grandfather, Xai Yang, 88, at the family's home at 267 County Road 150.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Jasper County Sheriff's deputies were called to the home at 12:18 a.m. Sunday, March 15, 2015 in response to a report of a shooting.

Deputies said witnesses reported that Lee Yang entered the home and was brandishing a handgun and yelling about monsters.

He forced his way into a second-story bedroom where his mother, grandfather and one other person were hiding from him, and waved the gun around, again yelling for help to fight off monsters. When the grandfather tried to push the gun away, it discharged hitting the grandfather in the head.

Lee Yang tripped while running from the bedroom and lost the gun down a flight of stairs, where another relative grabbed it and ran from the home with it.

Lee Yang ran back into the bedroom and eventually dove headfirst out a closed window, landing on a concrete porch below and was arrested by deputies.

Yang has also been charged with felony possession of a controlled substance after deputies say they found a pipe with a white substance in it that field-tested positive for methamphetamine in Yang's pocket after he was arrested.
