Carthage Chamber of Commerce staff surprised Carthage High School freshman Gracie Wood with the news that she had been selected to receive a $250 scholarship to “Leadership in Practice” this June at Westminster College in Fulton, Mo.
Upon completion of the program, Wood will give a presentation on her experience to the Chamber’s Board of Directors.
Wood was chosen from other applicants based on her application essay, GPA, school attendance, and school official recommendation.
Wood’s essay stated, “The ability to learn, the willingness to volunteer, and valued characteristics are things that I think are important for potential leaders to possess.  I would gladly represent Carthage in the Leadership in Practice Program.”
Chamber Office Manager Mary Jo Little was also impressed by Wood’s comments on her own support network and the support she tries to give to those around her.
“This young lady has the kind of solid foundation, heart for her community, and expectations of herself that will be valuable assets to her own and Carthage’s future,” Little said.
Wood’s essay also stated, “Leaders and potential leaders need to want to learn.  When we are willing to open ourselves up to knowledge, we are willing to correct ourselves as well and to strive to make things better by getting them right.”
The Leadership in Practice program was developed over 20 years ago by the Missouri Chamber Foundation to engage Missouri high school students in hands on, real world leadership training. Leadership in Practice is one of the state’s premier leadership emersion programs.  Now for four days each June, Missouri’s brightest rising sophomore student leaders come together to learn what characteristics and tools that tomorrow’s leaders need to meet the challenges of the world.
