The Missouri State Highway Patrol says a local man likely will not be charged after a wheel that broke loose from a trailer he was pulling on Interstate 435 in Clay County crossed the median and caused a fatal crash.
Michael Skali, 67, of Kansas City, died in the Jan. 26 crash. According to the Highway Patrol, the wheel came off a northbound trailer pulled by a truck driven by Mark Tobin of Grain Valley, flew across the median and struck the windshield of Skali's southbound vehicle, causing him to strike concrete barrier.
Skali was pronounced dead at the scene. Tobin was not injured. A Highway Patrol spokesperson said all indications are the crash resulted from a “freak accident.”
Both Skali and Tobin were wearing seat belts.
