CARTHAGE, Mo. -

An extra incentive has been added to “The Great Carthage Re-Leaf” program.

The campaign encourages residents and friends of the community to purchase trees to replace those lost through the natural devastation of the 2007 and 2008 ice storms. These trees may be planted near their homes, businesses or donated in-kind to the city to replace trees lost throughout the city’s parks.

The extra incentive that has just been added is that Pinewood Nursery will plant the trees, including adding the necessary fertilizer, free of charge.

“This is a tremendous incentive because planting trees can be a complicated process,” said Kate Massey, director of the Carthage Convention and Visitors Bureau. “For only $40, a person can purchase one of six varieties of trees and have it planted free. That is quite an offer by Pinewood Nursery.

The effort is a collaboration between the CVB and Pinewood Nursery in Carthage. The six varieties are October Glory, Autumn Blaze and Red Sunset Maples, as well as a redbud, white Dogwood and Cleveland Select Flowering Pear.

All varieties are available in a 5-gallon size bucket and are six to eight feet tall.

Residents or businesses may purchase them through the Carthage CVB for $40 per tree and may pick them up during the city’s annual Maple Leaf Festival, Sunday, Oct. 12, on the Historic Carthage Square beginning at 1 p.m. All orders must be placed no later than Wednesday, Oct. 1, to ensure delivery.
