CARTHAGE, Mo. -

A 16-year-old Carthage girl was detained Thursday morning for allegedly filing a false police report after she went missing for about two hours, according to law enforcement officers.

Carthage Police Det. Randee Kaiser said the girl was reported missing from her home at 7:52 a.m. Thursday by her parents and was found at 9:45 a.m. at a home west of Carthage.

Kaiser said he could not be specific about why she went missing, whom she was with or what she was doing while she was missing.

He said the parents had reported that the girl went out to start her car to go to school, but did not return to the home. The parents reported that they found her wallet and keys on the ground next to her car, but the girl had disappeared.

“Her parents didn’t know what had happened to her when they called it in,” Kaiser said. “We had assistance from our detective division, our school resources officer, and the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office in this investigation.”

Kaiser said the girl has been detained by Jasper County Juvenile Authorities, but no charges had been filed against the girl as of noon Thursday.

If she is charged, Kaiser said she would be charged as a juvenile and her name would not released because of her age.
