Breckin Williams’ two quick, untouched touchdown runs in the third quarter broke open what had been a close game in Webb City’s 38-14 season opening win over Ozark.
The Cardinals went on to win their 72nd regular season football game in a row, extending a streak that’s lasted since the seventh game of the 2003 season when Webb City traveled to Columbia Hickman and got thumped 30-3.
“It wasn’t as close as 30-3, let’s put it that way” said Webb City Head Coach John Roderique of the streak after Friday’s win.
Williams scored twice on two consecutive offensive plays with 7-yard and 20-yard runs early in the third quarter to break open a game that was tied 7-7 going in at halftime and give the Cardinals a 21-7 lead.
Ozark came back early in the fourth quarter with its second long passing touchdown of the game from quarterback David Salazar to receiver Skylar Verfuth, this one for 60 yards, to make the game 21-14.
Phoenix Johnson put an end to Ozark’s hopes of coming back with a 74-yard touchdown run less than a minute later to restore the Cardinals’ two-touchdown advantage.
Kicker Alex Easley and runner Jamison Cady added the gravy with Easley’s 25-yard field goal and an 18-yard run by Cady to finish the scoring.
