It’s been eight years since Sarcoxie has qualified for the postseason, and, well, the wait is officially over.
Sarcoxie, overcoming its early mistakes, parlayed a trio of sparkling special teams plays into a 33-14 victory over visiting McAuley Catholic Thursday in the regular season finale for both teams at Sarcoxie High School.
The Bears (3-7, 2-1 in Class 2 District 7 play) advanced to the postseason for the first time since 2002, capping a sometimes turbulent first season for first-year Sarcoxie coach Luke Rader. Sarcoxie advances to the regional round of the MSHSAA playoffs against Warsaw as the District 7 runner-up.
Senior Charles Vogel and the Bears surprised everyone with a 56-yard touchdown run on a fake punt before returning the opening kickoff in the second half 90 yards for a touchdown. Later, Sarcoxie successfully recovered an onside kick, which helped the Bears score, capping a run of 19 unanswered points in the third quarter and 26 in the second half.
Sarcoxie’s second-half scoring outburst helped the Bears battle back from a pair of seven-point deficits in the second quarter.
McAuley’s Shaw Robertson opened the scoring with a 2-yard touchdown reception from Mitch Wear, who finished with 189 yards passing.
