Summertime activities and other circumstances may have kept the Carthage Aquatic Team from participating at full-force at the Monett Waterthrashers Invitational Swim Meet on Saturday and Sunday, but that didn’t stop them from managing to still turn in a solid showing.

As a team, Carthage finished in fourth place in the 12-team field with 503.5 total points. The team results were: 1, Monett Water Thrashers, 1,707; 2, Joplin Stingray Swim Team, 1,076; 3, Siloam Springs Flyers, 1,009.5; 4, Carthage; 5, Branson Waves, 440.5; 6, Parsons Dolphins Swim Team, 393.5; 7, Webb City Cardinals, 390; 8, Lamar Tiger Sharks, 382.5; 9, Missouri State Aquatics, 210; 10, Nevada Neptunes, 202; 11, CSRC Stingrays, 173.5; 12, Pittsburg YMCA Swim Team, 87.

Individuals competed in both A and B divisions, and those who finished in the top eight of each event accumulated points toward the team totals. Carthage, meanwhile, had several participants finish in the top two of their respective events.

Taking first place in their events, the girls’ 10-under 100 medley relay team of Sonora Stearns, Carrie Wallace, Corinne Miller and Kimberly Sager won the B division with a finals time of 1:25.59. Lacey Stephens won the 15-18 year old girls’ B division 50-yard freestyle in 29.26, and the 200 IM in 2:53.09.

Seth Jensen had a very busy day. He won the 11-12 boys A division 50-yard backstroke in 33.93, the 100-yard IM in 1:13.99, and the 50-yard breaststroke in 35.81. Jensen also took second in the 100-yard freestyle, and the 50-yard freestyle. Jensen finished as the high-point award winner for his age group.

Meanwhile, Kenya Medlock took the 11-12 girls B division 50-yard backstroke in 43.37, while M’Lynne Wagner won the girls 15-18 50-yard backstroke in 37.08.

The girls’ 10-under 100 freestyle relay of Wallace, Sager, Grace Kennedy and Olivia Bene took first in 1:06.35 in the A division. They also won the 200 freestyle A division in 2:09.41.

Bene also went on to win the A division 10-under 50-yard butterfly in 34.66, the A division 50-yard breaststroke in 39.08, and finished second in the A division 100-yard freestyle.

Jacques Bene won the boys’ 11-12 A division 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:00.05, and finished in second in the 50-yard breaststroke and the 50-yard butterfly.

In the 11-12 girls’ B division 100-yard freestyle, Taylor Mansfield brought home top honors with a time of 1:16.70, before finishing second in the 100-yard IM.

Wallace finished second in the B division in the 10-under girls’ 50-yard butterfly, while Taylor Hart took second in the 100 freestyle, also in the B division.

“Despite not having the numbers we would have liked, I’d guess that we probably had 80-90 percent of our swimmers had their best times in several of their events over the two days,” Carthage Coach Andy Youngworth said. “The kids, especially the 11-12 and 13-14 year old girls, had great meets and dropped their individual times. It was a great meet for us.”

With a dual slated for Wednesday against Webb City, Carthage will be back in action with a meet at Nevada this weekend.
