Susan Campbell put in 22 years at Carthage Water & Electric Plant, the past 17 as the billing coordinator, and dozens of employees gathered to say farewell at a reception on Feb. 3 after her retirement.
A small group of employees, led by Administrative Assistant Susan Wendleton, serenaded Campbell with a custom tune; Cecil Howard, distribution manager, presented Campbell with a trophy as “Scarer of the Year,” for being the first to scare and being a good sport when she was startled, by her co-workers; and General Manager Chuck Bryant spoke at length about her contribution to the utility.
“A lesson learned from Suzie Campbell is to enjoy everything you do, never take yourself too seriously but always take your job and what you do seriously,” Bryant said. “She did that for 22 years, she took what she did seriously and she was the best at what she did every day.”
Bryant remembered sitting across a desk from Campbell for the first two years he worked at CW&EP, and how infectious her attitude was.
“She's built many many relationships over the years and we're a better company because of the work she put in,” Bryant said. “Her 22 years of service, the thing we'll take away from that is hard work, dedication, and then the abilities to enjoy the moment, laugh at yourself and the lasting friendships with employees and with customers.”
