Roy Lee Ward was known in the Carthage art community as a friend from Texas, and one of the best artists in the annual Midwest Gathering of the Artists.
Ward passed away July 13, 2015 in Bandera, Texas.
If one were to place Ward's paintings within an artistic movement, his work would probably be classified Western Historical. His work is, however, much more than just history. He depicts human experience in action. His interest in history is quite evident, but his past commissions range from historical to pure landscape. His mural for the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado is a gigantic painting of the famed Pike’s Peak Mountain. When he was commissioned to do the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Crippled Children’s mural in Dallas, he was asked to do historical Western.
Ward received his first degree from Baylor University, and on coming home from Vietnam, he received his second degree from the Los Angeles Art Center College of Design. He worked as an illustrator for several years doing work in New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, and Ft. Worth.
In 1972, due to the popularity of his work, he began to paint full-time for the galleries that represented him. His work can be seen in the United States, Canada, Japan and France. His work is displayed in private, institutional, industrial and museum collections.
As a professional artist, he spent eight years as a freelance illustrator doing work for advertising agencies in Los Angeles, New York, Dallas and Fort Worth. His cover illustrations for magazines, book jackets, calendars and movie posters have been seen across the country. He was selected by the Haas Corporation  to do a western calendar for publication and distribution nationwide that has won national awards in the advertising market for three consecutive years. In 1995, the state of Texas honored him by naming him Texas State Artist. He has also received MGA’s Founder’s Award and Artist Choice Award.
