  • The Sixth Annual Fall Ball Fall was held Friday evening at the Carthage Municipal Golf Course.
The event serves as a fundraiser for scholarships to the Fair Acres Family YMCA for families who would be unable to afford memberships. The scholarships also help kids with activities fees, child care and other character-building programs. This year the event raised $6,540, with many donating their winnings back to the cause.
In conjunction with the annual Bring Your Sticks to Route 66 golf tournament, chipping and putting contests were held as well as dinner outside the pro shop. The fundraiser's highlight of the evening was the ball drop; where golfers and non-golfers had the opportunity to win $1,000.
Balls were numbered one to 1,000, and hoisted into the air to be dropped simultaneously. The ball that landed closest to the hole was the winner – and Friday evening, that winner was Micha Lett, of Joplin. Even though she wasn't present at the event, her co-worker, Archie McDonald, called to tell her the good news.
“Oh my goodness, that is crazy,” she said over the phone to The Carthage Press Friday evening. “I thought Archie was messing with me … Oh my gosh. Thank you.”
Board members of the YMCA are: Cheryl Calhoon, Shrop Dunaway, Muffy Edwards, Grady Huke, Darrin Kaempfe, Archie McDonald, John Nicholas, Patrick Scott, Joe Ryder, Jacque Sappington, Andrea Smith, Joe Swearengen, and Andy Youngworth.
