  • A fire Friday evening destroyed a rural Jasper County home in the upscale development of Whispering Meadows off Missouri Highway 96 west of Carthage, according to the Carthage Fire Department.

  • A fire Friday evening destroyed a rural Jasper County home in the upscale development of Whispering Meadows off Missouri Highway 96 west of Carthage, according to the Carthage Fire Department.
    A fire department release said the home, at 9763 County Drive 191, would likely have to be demolished and replaced after the fire that was first reported at 7:22 p.m. on Friday.
    No one was injured, but firefighters couldn't say if anyone was home at the time the fire started.
    Jasper County's online mapping system says the home is owned by Robert and Stephanie Lacey.
    According to a fire department release, firefighters arrived to find the back of the home engulfed in flames from the basement to the second story.
    Much of the roof had collapsed and a stubborn fire continued to burn in the upper floors at about 8 p.m.
    Tankers, trucks and manpower from Oronogo, Duenweg, Carterville and Carl Junction were on scene to assist Carthage firefighters.
    Firefighters were on scene until 11:39 p.m.
    The cause was determined to be accidental, but no specific source of the fire was released.
