  • Michael Kenneth Grimes, 70, of Sarcoxie, Mo., departed this life on June 28, 2014 in Fayetteville, Ark., surrounded by his loving family.

  • Michael Kenneth Grimes, 70, of Sarcoxie, Mo., departed this life on June 28, 2014 in Fayetteville, Ark., surrounded by his loving family.
    Michael entered this life on Nov. 26, 1943 in Tulsa, Okla., to the union of the late Charles Albert and Dorothy Lucille (Varner) Grimes. Michael attended Carthage School until the 11th grade and was a graduate of Grove High School in Grove, Okla., and then pursued his Associate degree in Science attending both N.E.O and O.S.U.
    He worked many years as a respiratory therapist. For many years Michael could be found pushing cattle on horseback for Joplin Regional Stockyards.
    On April 25, 1988 he was united in marriage to Sundena Day in the Wilderness Church at Silver Dollar City, Mo. Mike proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Mike was a true cowboy at heart and enjoyed all rodeo events, but bull riding in particular and was a NFPB judging director. He loved the rodeos, fishing, hunting, and was a huge supporter of Sarcoxie athletics. Mike could be seen on the sideline and sometimes on the field at Sarcoxie games. He was charter member of the Geezer Brigade, meeting frequently for lunch at the Sarcoxie Senior Center. Those members include, Tom Wilson, USN, Gary Turner, USA, Cole Cummins, USA, Clovis Long, USN, Ed Hamm, USAF, John James, USAF, Bill McNeese, USMC and J.D. Whitledge, USMC. He was  of the Baptist faith.
    He is preceded in death by his parents, one brother; Leland Grimes and niece; Kitty Grimes Estes.
    Mike is survived by his wife, Sundena of the home, one son; Darin Grimes of Joplin, Missouri, two daughters; Melissa Grimes Bowman (Bobby) Diamond, Mo., and Candi Bowman (Charlie) of Sarcoxie, Mo., seven grandchildren; Chelsea Sherwood, Lauren Bowman, Zachary Grimes, Zane Grimes, Millie Grimes, Jacob Bowman and Tyler Bowman, one great granddaughter; Alexus Sherwood and one brother; Charles Grimes (Karen) of Carl Junction, Mo., as well as a host of other family and friends.
    Visitation will be Thursday, July 10, 2014 from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Graveside service with military honors will be 10 a.m. Friday, July 11, 2014 at Park Cemetery, Carthage, Mo., with Eric Roach officiating. On Sunday, July 13, 2014, Michael Grimes Cowboy Reunion, for family and friends will be held at Hornback Arena, Sarcoxie, Mo., with breakfast starting at 9 a.m. Church service will be at 10:30 a.m. followed by a car show and bull riding.  Memorial contributions may be made to The Sarcoxie Senior Center.
