  • Close to 16 pre-school-aged kids graduated from the Fair Acres Family YMCA's Safety Town program on Friday.
With record-breaking numbers in attendance this year, the two-week program provided a wide variety of safety education to the kids. The program involved learning how to safely ride a bus, follow traffic signals, animal safety with a visiting therapy dog, and meeting individuals with the Carthage police and fire departments, ambulance and Carthage Water & Electric.
A graduation ceremony was held at the Y where the kids received certificates, and volunteers were honored for helping with the little participants. Christopher Hernandez, with the Y, said this was by far the most successful Safety Town in his three years with the program.
“One day we had close to 25 kids,” he said. “This program started where two weeks was too much time, and now it's not enough time to do all things we have lined up for them.”
