Helen L. Rice of Jasper, Mo., passed away on June 20 after a brief illness.

Helen L. Rice of Jasper, Mo., passed away on June 20 after a brief illness. 
Helen Lorene (Cox) Rice was born Dec. 13, 1921, to Clara Rachel and Herbert Clifford Cox in Pratt, Kansas. She had one brother, Lloyd Fillmore, and two sisters, Mary Gladys and Naomi Rosine, who all preceded her in death. 
Helen graduated from Pratt High School in 1940 and then attended Salt City Business College in Hutchinson, Kan., where she learned to be a secretary. 
She worked at the AAA office in the Pratt County Courthouse during WWII and then at Swensen’s Chevrolet in Pratt.
On Oct. 16, 1949, she married Frank S. Rice, whom she had met through his sister and her lifelong friend, Ruth Mathis, who had suggested that Helen write to Frank while he was stationed in England in WWII.
The couple operated a farm southwest of Jasper, Mo. They had five children, David Rice (Arlene) of Joplin, Mo.,  Eda Rice of Jasper, Mo., Ruth Rice of San Antonio, Texas, Judy Rice of Jasper, Mo., and Sara Vermillion (Don) of Savage, Maryland. 
Her husband preceded her in death on July 5, 1996.
Surviving in addition to her children are grandchildren Jeffrey Rice, Michael Rice, Jennifer Rice, Matthew Vermillion, and Samantha Vermillion.
Helen Rice was a life-long Christian Scientist.  She will be remembered as a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Although her pies will be missed, her warm smile and gentle spirit will remain in our hearts.
A private memorial service for family will be held in October.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of the Midland Cremation Society, Joplin.
