  • Members of the Rotary Club of Carthage joined dozens of other Rotary Clubs in the Midwest to help an area community hit hard by a tornado.
Ron Petersen Sr., with the Carthage Rotary Club, said Rotarians from the largest Rotary International District in North America, District 6110, collected donations and purchased a specially equipped all-terrain vehicle to help the department reach emergencies in rough areas.
"The Fire Chief of the Baxter Springs Volunteer Fire Department indicated that their greatest need after the tornado was an ATV vehicle that could go into a damaged area for various reasons," Petersen said. "This was a piece of equipment that they did not have."
An EF1 tornado ripped a path through a residential part of Baxter Springs on April 27. The same storm also created a tornado in Quapaw, Okla., immediately south of Baxter Springs, that killed a Baxter Springs man.
The fire department and other rescuers had to struggle with debris and downed trees and power lines to search for people trapped in their homes.
Petersen said Rotary Club's Medical Supplies Network took bids from dealers and purchased the vehicle for the Baxter Springs Fire Department. The vehicle was lettered to identify it as belonging to the Baxter Springs Fire Department and noting the donation from the Rotary International District 6110.
The left over money, about $847 was given to the fire department to pay for gas.
In other business, the Carthage Rotary Club named a new President at it's June 19 meeting. Dr. Lewis Drackert took the gavel from Nate Dally, who served as President in 2013-2014.
The Rotary Club of Carthage meets the first and third Thursdays each month at Broadview Country Club.  New members are always welcome.
