  • Through some sentimental short stories, a local writer is hoping readers find encouragement.
Connie McKinney, a New York state native, enjoys working at the antique shop on the Carthage Square, Oldies & Oddities.
“I fit right in,” she said with a chuckle, “I'm a little old and a little bit odd. I've learned so much from the vendors and customers; for a history buff it's a piece of heaven.”
She also enjoys writing, and was inspired to share her work. This step of faith led her to sweet success. A recipe and three of her short stories were published in a compilation series: “Grandmother, Mother and Me: Memories, Poetry and Good Food,” in 2012; and the sequel, “Grandfather, Father and Me: Memories, Poetry and Good Food” in 2013.
“They're both family-friendly, sweet stories of encouragement or lessons learned,” McKinney said. “I was blessed with a happy childhood, and I know not everyone has that. I believe it's OK to borrow those memories. We're all on this earth to bless and encourage each other and I hope these books do that.”
On page 148 of the book geared toward mothers, McKinney shares her story of her grandmother and her recipe for molasses cookies. Her name was Helen Ellis, and lived in New York as a dairyman's wife.
McKinney's father-related stories, located on pages 60 and 159 in the other book, tell of a Christian-influence in the home and her Scottish grandfather's generosity.
“They just give life examples and how important the little things are,” McKinney said, coming from a grateful heart. “It becomes a very big thing in the heart and mind of a child.”
When McKinney learned her work was chosen to be published, she said it was a dream come true.
“I was thrilled and honored,” she said. “I've always wanted something published. I have a love for the written word, especially short stories, that's what I love to write the most. But besides motivation in the words, I hope these books are evidence to not give up on your dreams.”
“Grandmother, Mother and Me: Memories, Poetry and Good Food,” and the sequel, “Grandfather, Father and Me: Memories, Poetry and Good Food” are available at the Oldies & Oddities Mall on the west side of the Square. They were published by Hidden Book Press in Canada with Donna Clark Goodrich as the editor.
