  • Jasper track teams qualify several for state championships

  • Saturday was a banner day for Jasper’s track and field program at the Class 1, Sectional 2 meet in Lamar.

    With the top four finishers in each event qualifying for this weekend’s state championships, the Eagles qualified a total of six boys in five different events, and 13 girls in a dozen events.

  • Saturday was a banner day for Jasper’s track and field program at the Class 1, Sectional 2 meet in Lamar.
    With the top four finishers in each event qualifying for this weekend’s state championships, the Eagles qualified a total of six boys in five different events, and 13 girls in a dozen events.
    The Jasper girls also won the sectional championship, blowing away the rest of the field with 127 points, more than 50 points better than any of the other 26 schools competing.
    The Lady Eagles will be competing at state in a variety of field and track events.
    Sophomore Audra Etcheson placed second in the pole vault with a height of 9 feet. Sophomore Lexie Royster earned fourth place in the long jump with a distance of 14–11.25. She placed second in the triple jump, reaching a distance of 32–10.50.
    Senior Adi Etcheson finished second in the discus with a throw of 96–01. Both Kenedey Chaligoj and Elizabeth Maneval qualified in the shot put. Chaligoj, a junior, placed second with a distance of 31–10, while Maneval, a sophomore, threw 31 feet for third place. Royster won the 100-meter hurdles, and senior Julie Greer placed third with times of 16.69 seconds and 17.40 seconds, respectively.
    Audra Etcheson won the 100-meter dash in 13.45 seconds, and senior Karrington Garvin was third with a time of 13.56. Garvin placed third in the 300-meter hurdles. She finished in 50.49 seconds.
    Jasper’s girls also qualified in all four relay events. In the 4x800-meter relay, sophomore Bri Cawyer, junior Monica Steeves, junior Larissa Atnip and senior Whitney Davis finished third with a time of 10:40.91. The 4x200 relay team took second place with Garvin, sophomore Keylee McCutcheon, junior Haley Bennett and Audra Etcheson running in a time of 1:51.21. The 4x100 team won its event with Garvin, McCutcheon, Bennett and Audra Etcheson finishing in 52.99 seconds. Finally, the 4x400 relay team finished in fourth place with a time of 4:27.98; McCutcheon, Cawyer, Davis and Royster were running.
    Jasper boys
    The Jasper boys’ team will be represented in the pole vault, triple jump, two open events and a relay.
    Junior Matt Stump earned second place in the pole vault, clearing 12–06. Payton Smith, a senior, reached 38–10.75 for fourth place in the triple jump.
    Senior Jacob Holliday qualified in the 1600-meter run with a third-place finish. He posted a time of 4:49.87. Colton Sweeney, a senior, took third place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 53.75 seconds.
    Sweeney, freshman Hector Rivera, Holliday and senior Ricardo Grijalva teamed up for third in the 4x400-meter relay. They finished in 3:42.03.
    State schedule
    The Class 1 and 2 championships will be held in Jefferson City on Friday and Saturday.
    Aurda Etcheson will compete in the pole vault at 11 a.m. Friday. Royster will compete in the long jump at 2 p.m. Friday. She’ll be in the triple jump at 2 p.m. Saturday. Adi Etcheson will compete in the discus at 11 a.m. Friday. Chaligoj and Maneval will be in the shot put at 2 p.m. Saturday.
    Page 2 of 2 - Most running events will hold preliminaries on Friday and finals on Saturday. Royster and Greer will compete in the 100 hurdles at 12:50 p.m. Friday. Audra Etcheson and Garvin will compete in the 100-meter dash preliminaries at 1:20 p.m. Friday. Garvin’s 300 hurdles will be at 4:10 p.m. Friday.
    Relay events will take place as follows: 4x200 at 2:05 p.m. Friday; 4x100 at 3:05 p.m. Friday; 4x400 at 5:50 p.m. Friday, 4x800 at noon Saturday. Finals for the other relay events will also be Saturday.
    As for the boys’ schedule Stump will compete in the pole vault at 2 p.m. Friday. Smith’s triple jump will be 11 a.m. Friday. Holliday will be in the 1600 at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, and Sweeney will be in the 400 at 3:20 p.m. Friday. The boys’ 4x400 will be at 5:30 p.m. Friday, with finals at 3:45 p.m. Saturday.
