  • The ramps between eastbound Missouri 171 and County Route HH at Carterville will close through the summer the week of May 12, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.
When they reopen some time in August, MoDOT Assistant District Engineer Dan Salisbury said the ramps on that eastbound side will look like the half-cloverleaf ramps between Interstate 49 and County Route FF at the Flying J Truck stop interchange.
The off ramp will travel under the bridge to the east, then back to meet the road on the south end of the overpass. That change will give drivers from Missouri 249 1,500 feet to cross three lanes of traffic instead of 500 feet.
The on ramp will start on the same side next to the off ramp.
Guardian Road, the outer road on the south side of Missouri 171, will be relocated to the south of its current location and will be closed for reconstruction as well.
MoDOT said both the off ramp and on ramp on the south side of the Carterville bridge will be closed to allow contractor crews to move the fill dirt under the current ramps across the highway to the location of the new ramps.
MoDOT said drivers will need to find alternate routes to get around the ramp closings.
Signs and message boards will be in place to direct motorists to detours. Eastbound Missouri 171 drivers wanting to exit on Route HH will continue on to the Brooklyn Heights exit and get back on westbound 171. From there they return to Route HH from the west.
The ramps are being closed as part of a project to increase the distance between ramps for drivers traveling northbound on Missouri 249 to Missouri 171.
Currently, drivers have only 500 feet to exit from Missouri 249 to the eastbound off ramp at the Missouri 171/Route HH interchange.
In that 500 foot distance, drivers must cross two lanes of traffic to get from Missouri 249 to the eastbound off ramp at the Route 171/Route HH interchange. When construction is complete, that distance will be tripled, making it easier and safer for drivers to go from Missouri 171 to Route HH.
    Traffic Impacts:
    • Both eastbound ramps at Missouri 171/Route HH to be closed permanently.
    • Occasional lane closings on Missouri 171 and on Route HH.
    • Guardian Road will be closed at Route HH for the duration of the project.
All work will be done during the day and at least one lane of traffic will remain open in each direction for the duration of the project.
Weather and/or construction delays will alter the work schedule.
    Project Information:
    Prime Contractor: APAC-Missouri, Columbia
    Construction cost: $1.5 million
    Completion date: August 29, 2014
