  • Missouri’s sixth annual Show-Me Green Sales Tax holiday, which provides shoppers in Missouri with the opportunity to save on energy-efficient appliances begins Saturday, April 19 and runs through Friday, April 25.
Shoppers who purchase new ENERGY STAR®-qualified appliances in Missouri during the holiday will not have to pay the 4.225 percent state sales tax.
This means someone purchasing a $400 energy-efficient appliance in Carthage would save more than $25 in sales taxes on that item if they buy it next week. Normal sales tax on a $400 appliance in Carthage is $30.56, but the tax on a $400 energy-efficient appliance would be $13.86 next week.
Examples of ENERGY STAR®-labeled appliances that qualify for the sales tax exemption are:
    • Clothes washers
    • Refrigerators
    • Freezers
    • Dishwashers
    • Water heaters
    • Furnaces
    • Air conditioners
    • Heat pumps
Many local government entities have also opted to participate in the holiday, which means qualified purchases in those areas will be exempt not just from the state sales tax, but also from city, county and special district sales taxes. Jasper County and Carthage have opted out, meaning the sales tax rate in Carthage will be 3.413 cents on the dollar instead of the normal 7.638 cents on the dollar.
Twelve counties, 53 cities and 18 special districts have opted to participate in the holiday.
Airport Drive is the closest local community that has also waived sales taxes during this time, meaning the sales taxes on eligible appliances in that city is less than a penny per dollar.
