  • Changes are coming that may make it easier for drivers coming east from Webb City to exit at the Route HH interchange at Carterville.
Dan Salisbury, assistant district engineer for the Missouri Department of Transportation's Joplin office, said workers with APAC-Missouri will begin work this week on a $1.5 million project that will move that off ramp from eastbound Missouri Highway 171 to County Route HH from the east side of the interchange to the west side, giving drivers three times the space to cross from the left lane to the off-ramp.
Salisbury said the off-ramp will go under the existing Highway HH bridge, then loop back to connect with HH.
The project will increase the distance between ramps for drivers traveling northbound to eastbound on Missouri 249 exiting to Missouri 171.
"The Missouri 171/Route HH interchange is located very close to the Route 171/Route 249 interchange," MoDOT said in a written release. "Currently, drivers only have 500 feet to exit from Route 249 to the eastbound off ramp at the Route 171/Route HH interchange. In that 500 foot distance, drivers must cross two lanes of traffic to get from Route 249 to the eastbound off ramp at the Route 171/Route HH interchange. When construction is complete, that distance will be tripled, making it easier and safer for drivers to go from Route 249 to the Route 171/Route HH."
MoDOT said the project will require both eastbound ramps at the interchanged between Missouri 171 and Route HH to be closed at times. Also, drivers can expect occasional lane closings on Missouri 171 and on Route HH. In addition, Guardian Road will be closed for a short time at Route HH.
Salisbury said the project will require Guardian Road, which is the outer road on the south side of Missouri 171 to be moved east.
Drivers can expect ramp closings and occasional lane closings at the Route 171/Route HH interchange near Carterville as a project to rebuild the eastbound ramps begins this week, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.
All work will be done during the day and at least one lane of traffic will remain open in each direction for the duration of the project.
Weather and/or construction delays will alter the work schedule.
