  • Firefighters spent less than an hour on Wednesday putting out a fire in a building the property owners set intentionally to demolish the structure.
Carthage Fire Chief Chris Thompson said state law prohibits intentionally burning a structure without a permit from the state Department of Natural Resources.
Thompson said the call came in at 6:11 p.m. on Wednesday about a fire in a building at 12396 Old 66 Blvd.
Thompson said the building was fully engulfed in flames by the time firefighters arrived.
"The residents were in the process of demolishing the building and decided to burn it instead," Thompson said. "That's against DNR regulations and a complaint could be filed against them."
Thompson said he doesn't expect criminal charges because there was no criminal intent.
He said firefighters were on the scene for less than an hour. The building burned to the ground befire firefighters could put it out.
