  • A home at a Carterville business was destroyed in a fire that started around noon Friday.
Carterville Assistant Fire Chief Nelson Daniels said no one was injured in the fire at a residence also listed as John Hamm Auto Sales on Prosperity Road south of Carterville.
The fire started around 12:39 p.m. Friday and gutted  parts of the building, Daniels said.
"When we arrived we had heavy fire and smoke from the south and southwest parts of the building," Daniels said. "It looked like it started in a bedroom. It is a business, but we put it down as a residential fire because the people live there."
Smoke from the fire was visible for miles around.
"I was coming from Carthage to respond and I could see it from there," Daniels said.
Carthage, Webb City and Duenweg fire departments responded to assist the Carterville firefighters.
Daniels said Carterville police and the Jasper County Sheriff's deputies closed off Prosperity Road around the fire to allow firefighters to work unimpeded.
Daniels said everyone escaped the structure without injury and no one was hurt while battling the blaze. Firefighters were on scene for more than four hours.
He said the Missouri State Fire Marshall's Office was called in and ended up ruling the cause as undetermined.
The American Red Cross was also called in and volunteers provided canteen services on the scene and assisted the family with shelter and necessities.
