  • People touring the new Jasper County Sheriff's Office on the Carthage Square on Tuesday saw a new evidence bay chock full of stolen property.
Jasper County Sheriff's Detectives Chadwick Karr and Jamathon Lynch were in the room organizing the wide variety of items, ranging from tools and tool chests to fishing gear and electronics, for inspection today and tomorrow.
These were stolen items from thefts of storage units and vehicles in the Carthage, Joplin, Webb City and Carl Junction areas, as well as from Newton County and possibly thefts in Kansas.
These thefts occurred between June and December, 2013.
According to the Sheriff's Office, the victims who might have lost property in these thefts can come to see if their property has been recovered, but they must have a copy of their police report with the stolen items listed in the report.
Viewing days are from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. today and Thursday at the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office at 231 S. Main St. in Carthage.
Victims should go to the North side of the building to the “garage” area, the Sheriff's Office said.
Karr said the opening of the new Sheriff's Office, with the remodeled evidence bay, created by closing off the former drive through area of the bank that once occupied the building, was very helpful to their efforts to get that property back to its owners.
“It was pretty good timing to have this place open when it did,” Karr said. “We had no space at the former sheriff's office and we probably would have had to rent a storage unit to display these items.”
