  • Public service by citizens willing to share their time and knowledge with their community is what makes a city or a school run smoothly, and the time for those who want to step up is here.
The filing period started on Tuesday for the April 8, 2014 municipal election. The period ends Jan. 21.
The mayor's four-year term and five, two-year, city council seats, one in each of Carthage's five wards, are up for election by registered voters in Carthage's city limits.
The people holding the seats now are Mayor Mike Harris, Ward 1 Council Member Kirby Newport, Ward 2 Council Member Donald McLaughlin, Ward 3 Council Member John Studebaker, Ward 4 City Council Member Lee Carlson and Ward 5 Council Member Jason Shelfer.
Mayor Harris and Council Member Shelfer filed on the day filing opened.
The Council meets twice a month and council members serve on at least two of the council's five standing committees.
They also serve as liaisons to the committees and boards that run the Carthage Public Library, Powers Museum, Carthage Humane Society and about a dozen other agencies in and around Carthage.
Voters who live in the borders of the Carthage R-9 school district will vote on three, three-year seats on the board of education.
The people holding those seats now are Tony Diggs, Jeff Jones and Elizabeth Streich.
The Carthage Board of Education meets once a month.
The last day to register to vote in the April 8 election is March 12, 2014.
People interested in running for city council should file at Carthage City Hall on the east side of the Carthage Square, and bring $25 or 25 signatures on a petition from residents of the Ward where the person is running.
Carthage City Hall will be closed on Dec. 24 and 25 and on Jan. 1, 2014.
People interested in running for Board of Education should sign up at the Carthage Schools administration office, 710 Lyon St., Carthage.
The administration office will be closed on Dec. 24 and 25 and on Jan. 1, 2014 and will only be open 8 a.m.-2 p.m. on Friday and 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m Dec. 23 and Dec. 26-31.
