  • A local rising star will be leading the praise and worship service for the Fellowship of Christian Students at Carthage Middle School on Friday.
Students at the middle school are excited to see and hear Grant Landis early Friday morning at 6:20 a.m. This 14-year-old Joplin native recently returned from Los Angeles, Calif., from the iHeart Radio Music Festival and is expecting to sign with the same producers of the Backstreet Boys. He has thousands of followers through several social media outlets including 11,000 followers on Twitter.
Needless to say, there should be a huge turnout Friday, and the community is invited to attend.
“It's amazing the hype the students are building up about his coming here,” said CMS counselor Travis Bolin. “I think it's awesome for students to see someone their age achieve their dreams.”
Landis is the son of Mike and Brandi Landis, of Joplin. The family's roots are strong in Joplin, and Mike said as parents, their goal is keep the young music artist close to those roots.
“We keep an eye on his social media, and just read the comments that come pouring in,” Mike said. “So many ask him questions, and tell him that he inspires them, and to Grant it can be a bit overwhelming. He thinks he's just a kid chasing a dream. His passion is music, so he's had to put aside athletics – But as mom and dad looking at this, we're very proud of him and hope to keep him grounded. It's surreal watching this all unfold this year.”
Grant performs Christian and Pop music, and enjoys both. He has never had a voice lesson and only seven guitar lessons. He has seven songs he has written himself. And plans on performing at the Valenteen Hoop Concert in Nashville, Tenn., this February.
