  • A Carthage teenager was charged on Monday with one count of felony forcible rape after Jasper County Sheriff's investigators said he forced himself on his girlfriend and threatened her if she called authorities after the incident.
Dykota Lane Pennington, 17, Carthage, was arraigned in Jasper County Associate Circuit Court Thursday morning and is being held in the Jasper County Detention Center on $50,000 surety and $5,000 cash bond.
In a sworn statement, filed with the court, Jasper County Sheriff's Investigator Chris Douglas asked for a high bond for Pennington because he “has made violent threats against the victim if the incident is reported as well as taking her cell phone from her to prevent the incident from being reported. Also, when arrested, Pennington was attempting to flee to his mother's residence in Oklahoma.”
In his statement, Douglas said he was called to a home in rural Jasper County by the father of the girl. When interviewed, the victim said she was raped, and the document gave the girl's account of what happened. The victim also said Pennington threatened her.
Douglas wrote that Pennington was located at a home close to the victim's residence and interviewed. According to the sworn statement, Pennington said the girl told him no, but he continued after she said no. The victim, whose name and age were redacted in the sworn statement emailed to The Carthage Press, was driven by a family member to the Children's Center in Joplin for an exam and an interview.
