An autopsy has revealed the Derek Moore, the assistant Missouri Southern State University football coach fatally shot Friday night outside a Joplin movie theater, died as a result of several gunshot wounds to his body.
Lt. Matt Stewart with the Joplin Police Department said the suspect in the shooting, Jeffery Bruner, was currently estranged from his wife. Bruner, Stewart said, confronted his estranged wife and Moore in the parking lot of the Joplin Northstar 14 Theater.
“Mr. Bruner then shot Mr. Moore,” Stewart said in a prepared statement. “Mr. Moore fell to the ground and witnesses stated that Mr. Bruner fired more rounds after Mr. Moore was on the ground.”
Stewart said Bruner then went to his car and placed his firearm inside. Witnesses then helped detain Bruner until law enforcement arrived. Bruner was taken into custody without further incident.
Bruner has been transferred to the Jasper County Jail.
