Sarcoxie dominated Butler in the first round of Class 2 district playoffs Thursday night to post a 41-12 win.
Playing at home, the Sarcoxie squad built up a 28-6 lead in the first half, then used field position to the advantage to advance the score through the third period, then coasted under a running clock for most of the remainder of the game.
There was little doubt who was in control from the beginning, as Butler – 2-7 going into the game – saw Sarcoxie score within the first three minutes of the game. Sarcoxie, 8-1 going into Thursday night’s battle. It was more of the same through the first half, as Sarcoxie gained 212 yards on 26 carries on the ground in the first half while limiting Butler to 47 yards total offense. That was only two more yards than Sarcoxie gave up in penalties in the first half, or the score might have been even more lopsided.
Sarcoxie took the opening kickoff and set up at the 25 yard line; three plays later Jade Bloss broke through and ran to the Butler 8 before being wrestled down. Sarcoxie liked up offsides and had to gain five extra yards, but three plays later Carlos Lopez followed the line surge into the endzone from the one to put the Sarcoxie team on the scoreboard. The PAT was just off, leaving the score 6-0.
Butler found itself punting after three downs gained four yards, and Sarcoxie saw a good punt return nullified by a penalty on the punt return, and Sarcoxie had 58 yards to go for another score. Bloss broke through the line again and came up just a couple of feet short, but that set up a TD on the next play by Bloss. Conor Jones scored the two-point conversion, putting Sarcoxie up 14-0 with 5:26 left in the first period.
The teams traded possessions, then Sarcoxie got the ball back at the Butler 28 when Garett Triplett picked up a fumbled pitch. Eight plays later, Bloss added a TD, and Marcos Lopez kicked the PAT to make it a 21-0 game.
Sarcoxie forced another punt and drive the field, traveling 85 yards in 10 plays. Lath Kisling went around the right side of the Sarcoxie line to score from the one. Lopez kicked the PAT, and Sarcoxie led 28-0.
Butler scored with 2.3 seconds left in the half on a 9-yard pass from freshman quarterback Kaleb Kauffman to sophomore Tate Bollweg, making the score at halftime 28-6.
On the first possession of the second half, Butler tried a fake punt, and when the pass on fourth and 4 fell incomplete, Sarcoxie took over at the Butler 41 yard line. Jones scored from there, and Lopez kicked the PAT to put Sarcoxie up 34-6 early in the third period.
Sarcoxie got the ball after three Butler plays netted six yards, and a short punt gave Sarcoxie good field position at their own 41. Seven plays later, Bloss scored from the one, and Lopez kicked the point after. The 41-6 score put Sarcoxie up by 35 points and engaged the running clock with 4:48 remaining in the third period.
Page 2 of 2 - After an exchange of possessions, Butler recovered a Sarcoxie fumble then marched 69 yards in 10 plays to score on a four-yard pass. The PAT kick was off, but only 2:46 remained in the game, and Sarcoxie reserves pounded out enough yardage on the ground to run out the clock.
