Mel Brown, 79, of Carthage passed away at 2:40 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013 at Spring River Christian Village, Joplin.
Mel was born Aug. 15, 1934 in Carthage. He was the son of Raymond Brown and Florence “Carter” Brown.
Mel was a lifetime Carthage resident. Mel graduated from Joplin Jr. College and Phillips University in Enid, Okla. He was a partner in Carter-Brown Real Estate, a Commercial Real-Estate company.
Mel was active in church where he taught Sunday school, youth programs and served as a deacon. He served on the board of trustees at Southwest Baptist University Bolivar, Mo. He served as the president of the State Board of Realtors in both Carthage and Joplin. He also served on the Missouri State Board of Realtors. Mel worked with many charitable organizations as well.
Mel was united in marriage to Barbara McWhorter on October 10, 1959 in Wichita Falls, Texas. She survives.
Other survivors include one son, Wesley M. Brown of Webb City, Mo. and one daughter, Rebecca Brown Randles of Kansas City, Mo.; one sister, Jean Keller and her husband Ralph of Raymore, Mo.; one aunt, Verna Brown; three grandchildren Austin Brown, Addison Brown and Alex Randles; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Marjorie Bross.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013 at the Ulmer Funeral Home. Open visitation will be 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, 2013.
Burial will be in Fasken Cemetery, east of Carthage. Contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or Southwest Baptist University in care of the Ulmer Funeral Home.
