An inmate in the Jasper County Detention Center in Carthage apparently took his own life sometime around midnight on Tuesday.
Jasper County Sheriff's Capt. Derek Walrod said Cody Ennis, 21, Mountain Home, Ark., was found dead in his cell by jailers at around 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
An autopsy was scheduled for later Tuesday, but no results had been released at press time.
Walrod said Ennis died from asphyxiation, but he declined to say exactly what happened until an investigation was completed.
An initial investigation did not indicate that jailers did anything wrong or violated procedures in any way.
Walrod said Ennis had been in the Jasper County Jail since July as he went through the justice system on a charge of felony sexual assault dating back to March 27, 2011 in Joplin.
Walrod said Ennis had spent some time at the state prison in Potosi prior to being returned to Joplin.
He had waived a preliminary hearing on the charge in August and had just had a motions hearing before Judge David Dally on Oct. 7. He was scheduled for another motions hearing on Nov. 18. No trial date was listed in the state court records on the case.
Walrod said the investigation is continuing and detectives are awaiting the results of the autopsy.
