Move over, Olitz: Scandal's other awesome 'ship is getting on the drama train.
Huckleberry Quinn - the duo of Huck (Guillermo Diaz) and Quinn (Katie Lowes) - are going to hit a rough patch this season now that Quinn knows the exhilarating feeling of torturing someone.
After Quinn lost pretty much everything in her life because of Defiance, Huck helped her to channel her anger into his Dexter-like extra-curricular activity. That way, she won't be tempted to seek vengeance on Hollis Doyle (Gregg Henry) -- a no-no for Gladiators -- and therefore will continue to wear the white hat. As Huck's protégé, Quinn now has a taste for this dark world and is becoming everything he hates about himself. How will that affect their relationship? TVGuide.com sat down with Lowes and Diaz on the set of the ABC drama to get the scoop:
Let's talk about the Quinn and Huck relationship this season. Does Huck feel like he's created a monster? Guillermo Diaz: Absolutely, and he knows what it was like when he first killed someone and he's still addicted to it, so he's like, "Oh my God, what have I done? I taught her all this stuff and I talked to her about it and brought her with me, and she likes it and is possibly better at it than I am." Only in the way that she's not afraid to just jump in there and do it. Huck is always going to have the skills. He's a lot more skilled at it than she is. He doesn't really know what to do. We sense he's at a bit of a loss. "What do I do? How do I fix this?" She's off and running and he doesn't know if there's a way to bring her back.
Why do you think Quinn finds this world so attractive? Katie Lowes: She's had so many horrible things happen to her in her life that were out of her control, so the moment she got that drill and she was able to cause pain on someone else and fully control a situation, that's what she's fighting for. She's fighting for a sense of having control over life and a situation. And how much more can you do that than by torturing someone? This season, you'll see a lot of how that affects her relationship with Huck and whether he is a fan of that or not, whether people in the office find out about it. Then again, since Huck lost his mind a little bit, he hasn't been able to be the torturer we need, so maybe we need one.
Page 2 of 3 - Is that going to put a strain on their relationship? Diaz: Yeah. I think so for sure. It's turning her on a little bit that Huck is like, "Stop doing these things. Stop asking questions. You can't do this." I feel like that's enticing her even more and the thrill of the kill is enticing her even more. The more Huck says no, the more she's like, "Yes!" Lowes: We haven't yet begun to see the full lines she will cross. She's definitely crossing lines. And crossing lines, as an actress on the show, I'm scared. I'm so ready to go there. I will go anywhere Shonda Rhimes wants me to go any day of the week as long as Quinn doesn't die. Just keep her alive. I will be evil, I will kill people, I will do whatever you want. I will lie and cheat and steal, just keep Quinn alive. Diaz: I think Huck is going to kill Quinn. I'm just kidding. Lowes: Oh my gosh! Anything's possible on the show. It's one of those shows! What I think is so interesting is just the journey of where she's come from is so crazy. Her sense to be good at something and sense to belong and prove herself is so strong that they're experimenting a lot with how far she'll go. She definitely needs to be watched with her new skill set.
How does Huck's relationship with Olivia (Kerry Washington) change now after he attacked her? Diaz: At first it's strained and it's awkward to be around each other after that. But with family, sometimes you have to go through that stuff. Sometimes you have to have a real hard-core fight to bring you closer. It was about time for Huck to flip out on her and vent. I feel like it's going to bring them closer and make them love each other even more and work harder together and they're going to be OK. But it's intense. You've never seen Huck go off on her at all. He's physical with her and that's scary, and she's frightened and scared for her life in that moment.
Will Huck have a relationship with Jake (Scott Foley) now that he's back? Diaz: At first there's a little bit of, "Who the hell are you? Get off my corner," for Huck. He knows Jake's had an intimate relationship with Olivia and he doesn't like that. Then when he finds out he was in B613, there's going to be a little bit of like, "We know each other. I know you now. I feel like you're a brother." Not really that close, but we've both been through the same thing, so I think they're going to band together and try to fix things together.
