Ethel Rebecca Winans, 89, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013 at St. Luke’s Nursing Center, Carthage.
Ethel was born Dec. 24, 1923 in Byron, Okla. She was the daughter of the late Charles and Pearl Cutright.

Ethel graduated from Bryon’s school with honors. She then met and married Ovid V. Winans on March 8, 1942.
Ovid and Ethel joined the ministry shortly after marriage. For many years Ethel assisted him in his calling. She was an accomplished musician playing the piano, guitar, fiddle, and accordion. She always played for the church services and the groups that performed for them. After many years in God’s service they retired to start something new. They moved to Jasper, Mo., area and started dairy farming.

In the fall of 1975, they moved to Carthage, Mo. Ethel began raising poodles and chickens to sell and assisted Ovid with his four-legged endeavors. After a few years they started Winans Kennels and raised 20 different breeds of dogs.

Ethel will always be known for her love of flowers and her perpetual green thumb. There wasn’t a flower, plant, or animal that she couldn’t grow or raise.

She passed her great love of music to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. When she was no longer able to play, they played for her. While living at St. Luke’s her favorite activity was bingo, she never wanted to miss a game.

Ethel is survived by her daughter, Dee Hogan, and son Dennis Winans, both of Joplin, Mo.; two brothers Ray Cutright, wife Sarah of Jones, Okla., and George Cutright of St. Johns, Kan.; two grandchildren, Jason Hogan of Joplin, Mo., and Michelle Hogan-George, husband Brian of Carthage, Mo.; two great-grandchildren, Christopher and Sam George.

Also several nieces and nephews and an extra special friend Beth Watson of Carthage, Mo.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Ovid; one sister Clara Viola and two great-grandchildren, Harry and Charlie George.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, 2013, at Knell Mortuary, Carthage.

Wesley Peterman and Dutch Peterman will officiate. Interment will be in Ozark Memorial Cemetery, Joplin, MO.
