  • Robert Charles Hood passed away at his home Sunday Oct. 13, 2013 after a hard-fought battle with melanoma.
    Bob was born July 10, 1935 in Carthage, the third son of Eugene and Frances (Webb) Hood. He was a 1953 Carthage graduate and then graduated from Pittsburg State University.
    Bob worked for Empire District Electric Company from 1963 until 1995; he retired from his position as a customer service consultant. Prior to his career at Empire, Bob worked for the Iron Workers Union, Heisten Construction and Flex-O-Lator’s.
    He also served in the Navy aboard the destroyer-escort USS George A. Johnson for two years in the mid-1950’s.
    He re-enlisted in the Naval Reserve in 1977. He was awarded the Naval Air Reserve Force “Safety Pro” by Admiral Olsen in 1992 for preventing a possible loss of aircraft and crew. He retired from the Reserve as a Metalsmith Senior Chief in 1995.
    Bob is survived by one brother, George Hood and wife Naomi of Houston, Texas and one sister Marie Templeton and husband Don of Carthage: one sister-in-law Maudie Hood of Wyandotte, Oklahoma. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers- William Hood, Raymond Hood, and Tom Hood.
    A Rosary will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday Oct. 17, 2013 at the Ulmer Funeral Home followed by graveside services at 11 a.m. at Park Cemetery Carthage. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday Oct. 16, 2013 at Ulmer Funeral Home.
    Contributions can be made to St. Ann’s Catholic School in care of Ulmer Funeral Home. Online condolences may be made at www.ulmerfh.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Ulmer Funeral Home.
