Wilma Leonard Turner, of Rolla, passed away Wednesday, September 25, 2013 at the age of 79.
She was born in Elk Prairie, MO on September 8, 1934 to the late Earl and Marie (Simily) Leonard.
On July 3, 1966 she married James "Jim" Turner, who survives.
After graduating from Baylor University, Wilma began her teaching career in the Rolla Public Schools and coached championship debate teams at Rolla High School and Parkview High School in Springfield, MO. She also served on the Rolla Board of Education for ten years and on the Board of Directors, Missouri School Boards Association. Late in her career, she was a lecturer in public speaking and communications at the University of Missouri—Rolla (now Missouri S & T).
Wilma was very active volunteering her talents with P.E.O. She was initiated into P.E.O. Chapter EM of Rolla and was currently a member of Chapter LL of Rolla. Later, she had served as the past president of the Missouri State Chapter and the International Chapter. She also faithfully attended the First Baptist Church in Rolla where she served as the financial secretary for 37 years and as the church historian.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Anne Marie Turner, and her brother, Earl Wayne Leonard.
Wilma will be greatly missed by her surviving family which includes her husband Jim Turner, of the home; her son, Jay Turner and his wife Kathi, of Rolla; one sister, Wanda Botkin and husband Morris, of St. Charles, MO; two grandchildren, Molly and Joshua Turner, of Rolla; a brother-in-law, Dr. George Warren Swift, of Blacksburg, VA; several nieces, nephews, other extended family members and many dear friends.
A visitation for the family and friends of Wilma Turner will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, October 3, 2013 at the Null & Son Funeral Home in Rolla. A private burial will take place Friday. A public memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, October 5th at the First Baptist Church in Rolla.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the P.E.O. Foundation designated for the Wilma/Anne Turner Endowed P.E.O. Scholar Awards or to the Rolla First Baptist Church.
