  • Gregory Alan Simmer, age 53, Carthage, passed away at 8:01 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013 at Freeman West Hospital after a sudden illness.

  • Gregory Alan Simmer, age 53, Carthage, passed away at 8:01 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013 at Freeman West Hospital after a sudden illness.
    Greg was born Nov. 28, 1959 in Perry, Iowa to Bill Simmer and Velma Bass Simmer and had lived in the area most of his life.
    Greg worked as an assistant manager for Casey’s General Store in Carthage for several years. He loved animals and was active with the local Humane Society shelters.
    He is survived by his partner of 18 years, Rod Neuhalfen, Carthage; his parents, Bill and Velma Simmer, Perry, Iowa; his brother, Scott Simmer and his wife, Barbara, Liberty, Mo.; nieces and nephews, Aaron Simmer, Theresa Hanson, Kristie Simmer, Trey Ogden; great nieces and nephews, Chloe Carrillo, Camden Simmer, Abigail Cairns; aunts, Helen and Lou Denny, Mae, Doris, Donna; one uncle, Carroll Bass; and other family members, Roger and Jackie Neuhalfen, Perry, Iowa, Ronnie and Lonnie Neuhalfen, Perry, Iowa, Marcie and Kenny Mosier, Perry, Iowa, Kyle Neuhalfen, Nichole and Megan Neuhalfen and Smiley Mosier.
    Greg was preceded in death by a brother, Kurt E. Simmer and a niece, Molly Simmer.
    Graveside services are planned for Friday at 10 a.m. at Dudman Springs Cemetery, Carthage.  Rev. Bob Simon will officiate. Pallbearers will be Richard Steele, Don Myers, Shawn Pybas and Tom Todd. Honorary pallbearers will be Lou Denny and Carroll Bass.  
    A prayer service will take place Thursday at 5 p.m. at Parker Mortuary.  The family will receive friends following until 7 p.m.
    Arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.
