One man is in the hospital after a stabbing incident in a rural area just west of Carthage and Jasper County Sheriff's deputies were still looking for the man they believe stabbed the victim late into the evening on Wednesday.
Jasper County Sheriff Randee Kaiser said it was the first of a string of events that made for a bizarre evening for officers in Carthage and Jasper County.
Kaiser said the stabbing took place at about 4:15 p.m. at a home at the corner of Street Car Road and Country Club Road just west of the Breckenwood Addition and south of Morgan Heights Road.
Kaiser said deputies were searching in several areas, including parts of Carthage, for the suspect.
The victim was taken to a Joplin hospital and required surgery, Kaiser said.
He said the victim and suspect were acquaintances and were arguing when the incident occurred.
Carthage Police Chief Greg Dagnan said two Carthage officers who were assisting in the search started chasing a suspicious individual who ran from them in the north part of Carthage north of McGregor and Claxton streets.
It turned out the man was not the suspect they were looking for, but he did have several outstanding warrants, so he was arrested.
Dagnan said during the two-hour period after the stabbing, Carthage police got involved in a vehicle pursuit after someone hit and knocked down a utility pole at 13th and Clinton streets, then fled. That person was arrested for running from police and on outstanding warrants.
Police also responded to two domestic violence incidents, one on South Hazel Street and the other across Fifth Street from the Carthage Police Station.
