  • Students in the Carthage High School Key Club are hitting the ground running (or walking) this year.
Kicking off an active school year, the Key Club has set the Just Breathe 5K Run/Walk for 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 14 at the Carthage High School. All proceeds of the event will benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
“They really built up their confidence with the Zumbathon last year and we have a very ambitious freshman class coming in,” said CHS advisor Patricia Woods of her Key Club students. “The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is dear to our hearts here in the science department and the kids are all about supporting local families.”
For those wishing to contribute to the event, sponsor posters will be available to feature someone with Cystic Fibrosis or in memory of someone who lived with the disease.
If the kids want to race, there will be a One-Mile Fun Run for ages 4-10. The Carthage Fire Department will be present to show a truck to spectators, and Anderson’s Ice Cream will have a tasty spot in the event too.
To race, participants may register and pay with a credit card by going to SignMeUp.com and searching for the “Just Breathe 5K” or by searching for form number 94466. The website has a $2.60 convenience fee. Or, racers may start picking up packets at 8 a.m. the day of the race. Registrations are also available at 24 Fitness and the Fair Acres Family YMCA.
Donations and registration forms may be mailed to: Brandi Shoemaker or Patricia Woods; Carthage High School; 2600 S. River Street; Carthage, MO 64836. The fax number is: 417-359-7037.
In the event of inclement weather, the race will be rescheduled for Saturday, Sept. 21.
The Key Club is one of the several branches of the Kiwanis Club, and was revitalized last year at the Carthage High School after 25 years of disbandment. This year, the club will set a new event every month.
