  • Leslie Raymond Strait, 95, Carthage, passed away Monday, July 22, 2013 at his home with his family at his bedside.
    Leslie R. Strait was born March 14, 1918 in Hoberg, Mo., the son of the late Walter Leslie Strait and Pearl Mattie Smith Strait. He was a graduate of Mt. Vernon High School, Class of 1937. He and his family moved to Carthage in 1937 from Hoberg, Mo. He was a U.S. Marine veteran, serving during WWII at the Battle of Midway from 1941 to 1945. He married Eunice Hill on Oct. 9, 1943 in Los Angeles, Calif.; she preceded him in death on March 11, 2009.
    He and his wife owned and operated Stanton Plumbing and Heating Co. from 1945 till 1988, when he sold his business to his son, Richard.
    Leslie was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Carthage, where he served as a deacon, served on the church session and was a church trustee. He was also a loyal and faithful member of the Carthage Lions Club for many years and was a lifelong member of the Carthage VFW.
    He was also a very avid fisherman and loved teaching his love of fishing to his grandchildren and others.
    Survivors include a daughter; Terry Jean (Raymond) John, Carthage; one half sister, Donna (Perry) Vaught, Crane, Mo.; one brother, Ray (Clarice) Strait, Independence, Mo.; six grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Richard C. Strait, a grandson, Roger Strait, a sister, Lelia Mickley and a brother, Max E. Strait.
    Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 26 in the Knell Mortuary Chapel. Rev. Matthew Roberts, First Presbyterian Church, Carthage officiated. Special music, “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Rock of Ages” was played. Interment was in Park Cemetery, Carthage. Pallbearers were Carson John, Danny John, Scott John, Brady Strait, Wayne Strait and Stewart Johnson. Honorary pallbearers were Tradrien Hill, Rick Prescott and Bailey Strait.
    Memorial gifts are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church or the Carthage Lions Club.
