The Carthage Public Works Department announced that East 13th Street around the intersection with Buena Vista Street will be closed for much of the day on Monday.
Public Works Director Zeb Carney said construction crews will use a large drilling rig to take soil core samples to be used to plan the construction of a new bridge on 13th Street at that location next Spring.
The drill rig is large enough to take up most of the street.
Carney said the the road will be close at about 8 a.m. and reopen at 6 p.m. to allow the drillers to work around the bridge.
The city has budgeted $225,000 to replace the bridge over the small creek just east of Buena Vista Street and $5,000 for storm water improvements in the area.
Carney said construction of the new bridge will take place in the Spring of 2014. He said 13th Street will likely be closed for about eight weeks next year for the construction project.
