  • A Missouri Department of Transportation project to put a new surface on Carthage's main commercial corridor south of Fairview Avenue has been delayed a week.
MoDOT said a project that will put new asphalt on Missouri Highway 517 in Carthage between Fairview Avenue and the southern-most Carthage interchange on I-49 will start on June 24 instead of June 17, weather permitting.
The streets to be resurfaced include Garrison Avenue, Fairlawn Drive and Grand Avenue, the Grand Avenue interchange on I-49, as well as the Roundabout where Fairlawn Drive, Grand Avenue and Airport Drive meet.
MoDOT said in a written release that all the work will be done at night to minimize the affects on drivers in Carthage.
The work will start at 7 p.m. on Monday, June 24, when crews close the I-49 ramps at Grand Avenue in the south part of town. Resurfacing those ramps is expected to take one night.
While the ramps are closed, drivers should plan to use the Fairview or Fir road ramps.
The workers will then shift to Missouri 571 in Carthage, where drivers should expect one-lane traffic in the big shopping district in south Carthage starting at 7 p.m. every night and ending at 7 a.m. each morning.
MoDOT said one lane will remain open during the work, however, drivers may be shifted away from where crews are set up working.
Toward the end of the project, a new guardrail will be installed at the interchange between Grand Avenue and I-49.
MoDOT said the work should be finished by late July. Blevins Asphalt, of Mount Vernon, is the general contractor on the $411,165 project.
