  • Mrs. Mildred Gollhofer, 91, of Sarcoxie, Mo., a longtime area educator, departed this life on Wednesday, May 23, 2013 at St. Luke’s Care Center in Carthage, Mo., after a sudden illness.

  • Mrs. Mildred Gollhofer, 91, of Sarcoxie, Mo., a longtime area educator, departed this life on Wednesday, May 23, 2013 at St. Luke’s Care Center in Carthage, Mo., after a sudden illness.
    Mildred entered this life on April 30, 1922 in rural Carthage, Mo., born to the late Warren T. and Ethyl R. (McKelvey) Denney.
    She was raised in Carthage, Mo., and was a 1941 graduate of Carthage High School. On June 29, 1951 she was united in marriage to Victor L. “Roy” Gollhofer and to this union two daughters and one son were born. She and Roy lovingly raised their family in Sarcoxie, Mo. In 1951 she graduated from Southwest Missouri State University with a bachelor of science degree in education. She went on to receive her master’s degree in 1980 from Pittsburg State University. Mildred was a devoted educator for forty-three years. She began her career teaching at Victory Rural School near Carthage, later moving to Mark Twain in Carthage, Sarcoxie Junior High and eventually retiring in 1985 from Joplin North Junior High.
    After retirement she continued to substitute teach at Sarcoxie High School for an additional thirteen years.
    Her greatest passion in life was teaching junior high English. She was innovative in her teaching style and was always creating new ways to make learning fun and easier to comprehend. She taught with compassion, kept her classroom in order and was never afraid to discipline when necessary.
    Mildred accepted Christ as her personal Lord and Savior early in her life and was a 62-year member of the Sarcoxie First Baptist Church. She was also involved in the Daughters of the American Revolution John Alexander Fullerton Chapter and the P.E.O. Sisterhood.
    She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of fifty-six years, Roy Gollhofer on March 30, 2008; a sister, Mary Grieb; and three brothers, Robert, William and Leslie Denney.
    Mildred is survived by two daughters, Melody Ann Boatright and husband, Michael, of Kansas City, Mo., and Vickie Jean McLaughlin and husband, John, of Greenwood, Mo.; a son, Lt. Col. Victor Roy Gollhofer and wife, Chong Hui, of Overland Park, Kan.; two grandchildren, John McLaughlin and Isabel Gollhofer; three sisters-in-law, Mary Denney of Farmington, Mo., Eula Gollhofer of Joplin, Mo., and Lila Gollhofer of Granby, Mo.; two brothers-in-law, Ray Gollhofer and wife, Frankie, of Sarcoxie, Mo., and Paul Gollhofer and wife, Mary, of Carl Junction, Mo.; several nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other family, friends and countless former students.
    Funeral services for Mrs. Gollhofer will be held on Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Sarcoxie, Mo., with Bro. Quintin Davis officiating.
    Burial will follow in the Sarcoxie Cemetery. Those honoring her life by serving as pallbearers are John McLaughlin, Jr., Larry Triplett, Gary Turner, Bill Gollhofer, Steve Gollhofer, Greg Jones and Phillip Lewis. Penny Mathis, Maxine Palmer, Vollie Cook, Molly Boyd, John Chandler and Jess Bair will be serving as honorary pallbearers.
    Page 2 of 2 - The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Housh-Goodwin Funeral Home in Sarcoxie, Mo.
