Where’s the Snow! – A ND Car Game
Have you ever played car games? I spy a ________; First one to spot a _______ wins; Look for a red/black/purple car or the ever popular license plate game of who sees an out of state plate first? Earlier this week, two other Extension Agents and I carpooled to a day-long training session held in the lower, west of central section of ND and played a car game very appropriate for this time of year.
Keep in mind that one of the other agents began her journey not far from the ND/Canadian border so by the time we reached our destination we were not many miles short of covering the entire north to south width of our state. Another began her journey east of Devils Lake so we also covered a great deal of the east to west length of our fair state.
Our version of car games was “Where’s the snow?” Heading from north to south, one would expect the depth of this year’s snowpack to decrease. Nope, not true for the long, long winter of 2012-13. Mid-state width wise, mid not-so-great-cell-phone-coverage area, snow still spanned the length of shelterbelts, covered ditches and calmly rested on hill sides. Moving east to west, it was the mid-point which again still displayed the most whiteness.
Eventually, we arrived at our destination and found the lobby filled with out-of-state, oil drilling specialists of some type who were having difficulties with the company credit card being accepted for their hotel stay. As we waited our turn, one of the group loudly commented that “This place has the most snow they have ever seen anyway in April!” No, we calmly replied, that would be mile marker _____, just south and west of ________. They stared; we left for dinner. I love ND.
