April 24, 1800
Library of  Congress established
President John Adams, on April 24, 1800, signed the bill which officially moved the federal government from New York City to the new capital city of Washington. The bill also established the Library of Congress and appropriated $5,000 for "the purchase of such books as may be necessary for the use of Congress."
