  • Incumbent Carthage City Council members Jim Swatsenbarg in Ward 1 and Steve Leibbrand in Ward 3 overcame challengers to win reelection amid anemic voter turnout on Tuesday.
Turnout county-wide was 8.34 percent, with 3,333 people casting ballots out of 39,984 registered voters in places holding elections.
Approximately half those casting ballots were in the Webb City school district, where 1,301 voters said yes to a school bond issue and 333 said no, meaning the issue passed overwhelmingly.
In Carthage, Swatsenbarg beat Trevor C. Smith for the Ward 1 post, 32-10. Leibbrand beat Mike Hutton for the Ward 3 post by a 31-12 vote.
The other three seats in Carthage featured incumbents running unopposed. Winners were Larry Chapin in Ward 2, Dan Rife in Ward 4 and Ed Hardesty in Ward 5.
All five council members will be sworn into office at the April 9 Carthage City Council meeting. These are two-year terms.
    In other races
    • There was no election for Carthage Board of Education because the two incumbents, Mark Westhoff and Justin Baucom were the only two to file for the ballot.
    • In the Sarcoxie Board of Education, not including the Newton County vote, Gary Turner and J.T Roberson lead for the two open seats with 176 votes and 149 votes to 131 votes for Jim Acheson and nine votes for the incumbent, John Lewis.
Lewis was arrested several weeks ago and awaits a federal trial on charges of possession of child pornography.
    • In the race for Jasper Board of Education, not counting Barton County voters, Alicia Rives leads with 155 votes, Matthew Dumm has 124 votes, Joe Heger has 116 votes and Carolyn Corle has 70 votes. The top two will win the two seats.
    • Jasper will have a new mayor as incumbent Paul “Dusty” Nelson lost to Bill Hulstine 87-70.
    • The two candidates for Jasper City Council, Mike Smith in the east ward and Mark Weng in the west ward, ran unopposed.
    • In the race for Sarcoxie Board of Aldermen, Ward 1, Johnny Mandera won a close, three-way race with 22 votes to 17 for Rick Mize and 15 for Aleasha Harrison.
Cole Cummins was the only person running for the Ward 2 seat.
