  • according to the bracket, the carthage girl's basketball team's victory against nevada thursday night in the district tournament was an upset, but don't tell that to the tigers.
"they were the higher seed, but we were confident," carthage head coach jim moore said. "we thought we were the better team on paper. you've got to come out and prove that, and we did. i thought the girls really answered the call well and came out and did what i expected them to do, get the win."
carthage, the third seed in the class 4, district 12 tournament, overpowered second-seed nevada in the second half en route to a 49-32 victory, setting up a showdown with top-seeded webb city for the district championship at 1 p.m. saturday.
carthage and nevada battled to a 6-6 after a quarter in what was a defensive struggle early on. freshman maya williams' free throw 17 seconds into the second quarter put the tigers up by a point, but nevada took an 8-6 lead before the tigers went up 9-8 on two free throws by junior amy keller.
nevada led 12-9 before junior vanessa pawlak made two free throws, and the tigers took a 14-13 lead after she added a three pointer with 2:37 left in the half. nevada, though, scored on two free throws with 1:07 remaining on the clock and led 15-14 at the break.
the second half was a different story.
carthage opened the third on an 11-1 run to claim a 25-16 lead with senior chloe' shepherd scoring twice on the run, pawlak scoring four points, williams making a free throw and junior regan gartner scoring from the floor. nevada crept back to within two points, but the tigers ended the quarter with a 31-23 lead and only pulled away in the fourth.
pawlak scored 15 points, williams added 12 and shepherd had 10.
carthage now awaits webb city on saturday afternoon.
"you put yourself in a position to win a championship and we have a chance," moore said. "webb city and us are going to battle. they know us real well and we know them. they're talented, but we've got some talent too. it's the district championship, yeah, but it's also a big rival game and that's always fun, too."
