  • Where else can you party to help local students?
The Carthage R-9 Foundation, led by Amy Grimes, and the Bright Futures program, under the direction of Scott Ragsdale, and the McCune-Brooks Healthcare Foundation are teaming up to help bring some fun events this year to help feed Carthage students in need. The Food for Thought program invites local citizens to come up with an event, send the information to the Foundation to help promote it, enjoy the benefits of being a host and have fun raising funds for the Hungry Tiger Backpack Program.
“The ideas are limitless,” Grimes said. “It's all about giving an event, having fun and raising money for a good cause because there is a need in Carthage.”
The Backpack Program currently serves 200 students in Carthage, which is 5 percent of the student body in grades kindergarten to senior. Ragsdale said about 65 percent of the student body are on free-reduced lunch, which translates into 2,600 students. At each school, students who receive their nutrition only at school are identified, and sent home on Friday with two days of food for the weekend. On Monday, they return with the backpack.
“The ultimate goal is that no kids in Carthage go hungry,” Ragsdale said.
