The Stars and Stripes originally began during the Civil War, but was discontinued until World War I. The weekly newspaper was published from February 8, 1918, to June 13, 1919, by order of General John J. Pershing.

Although it was discontinued after the war, the Stars and Stripes has been published coninuously since 1942.
